Randy Houser is giving back to a man who made a difference in his life.
Growing up in a small town and perfectly content with playing his music, Randy doubted he would ever go to college. Yet the encouragement of a teacher by the name of Thomas Carson gave Randy the "little kick in the butt” he needed to not only pursue an education at East Central Community College in Decatur, Miss., but to ultimately propel him toward building a successful country music career.

Earlier this year, Tom Caron was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. Randy will play a benefit concert scheduled for Nov. 12 to help raise money toward treatments.

Professional songwriters don’t always make the leap to the big stage, but for Randy Houser the transition was natural. After gaining recognition for co-writing chart-topping country hits for Trace Adkins and Justin Moore, Houser recorded his debut album Anything Goes for Universal South Records. Several CMA award nominations, television appearances and national tours later, he is a major player on the country music scene. This summer, he’s on the road with Willie Nelson for the Country Throwdown Tour and preparing new songs for his third studio album. OurStage caught up with Houser to talk about the inspiration for his most recent single, his experience breaking into the Nashville scene, and his method for achieving a unique sound in the studio.

OS: You recently released a new single called “In God’s Time,” which has a pretty powerful spiritual message. Could you tell us more about the inspiration for the song?

RH: “In God’s Time” came at a time when I really needed to hear from God. He more or less kind of popped me upside the head and said, “Hey, you need to think about things a little bit,” and I think that’s what I did. This song had been in my heart for a while. It’s really about slowing down and letting things happen instead of trying to make things happen. It’s not like you’ve got to quit working, but a lot of times we expect things to be the way we want them, and we expect to have things happen when we want them and how we want them. Sometimes that’s just not the case. Sometimes God has a different plan for us. So in that song I was learning to chill out and handle a lot of things that I had originally called problems.

Country legends Bill Anderson and the Oak Ridge Boys lead this year's CMA Music Festival Kick-Off Parade. The parade will roll through downtown Nashville on Wednesday, June 8 from Broadway and 10th Avenue to Riverfront Park for the CMA Music Festival Block Party.

The free concert at Riverfront Park will include performances by Randy Houser, Josh Thompson, the Eli Young Band, and Uncle Kracker. Randy Houser performs at 3pm.

Talk about something you really don't ever want to experience firsthand: On Wednesday afternoon, Randy Houser and crew were in South Carolina prepping for their show that evening, when all of a sudden they noticed flames coming from the rear suite of their bus.

The bus rapidly filled up with black smoke, but thankfully everyone got out safely. As for their belongings...well, that was another story.

Tour Bus Catches Fire

Today began as a normal day-of-show for Randy Houser and his crew as they were preparing for their concert tonight with WIWF the Wolf in Isle of the Palms, SC; however this afternoon, things took a turn for the worse. At around 12:40 p.m. CT, the crew noticed flames emanating from the rear suite of the bus, causing thick black smoke to billow throughout the corridor and main cabin. Houser and all the band and crew members were safely evacuated, however all of their gear, clothing and personal belongings were lost.

In the midst of the chaos, Houser managed to take a video with his cell phone camera capturing the horrifying damage. Although shaken, he sent a message that ‘all are safe’ to his manager. He said, “Fire is out. Lost all my clothes. I’m pretty sad, but so thankful we all got off safely. That fire burned all through our home on wheels.”

The cause of the fire is still unknown, and it has not been determined whether or not the bus will be able to be saved through repairs. The show tonight will remain on schedule.

Modern music industry pros say the success of an artist lies in their ability to make a meaningful connection with fans. If that’s truly the case, country artist Randy Houser has nailed it. After a fervent outpouring of comments from fans via Facebook and Twitter commending his first live performance of self-penned ballad, “In God’s Time,” at the Ryman Auditorium in January, the 2011 ACM Top New Solo Vocalist Nominee witnessed how one song — and one compelling message — can make an unforgettable impact.

After incessant demand from fans for a high-quality, shareable version of the song, Randy went into the studio and filmed a new solo acoustic in-studio video capturing his performance of it.

On Friday, AOL’s The Boot hosted the world premiere of the new video, which later was featured on AOL Music’s homepage; and today, Houser’s label Show Dog-Universal Music announced they will release “In God’s Time” as Randy’s next single on country radio in coming months.

In response to the staggering affirmative feedback, Houser remains humbly hopeful the song will make a positive impact on people, if nothing else.

“This song was really a testament to what I’ve been going through last year-- from wondering what was going on in my life, to asking when things would work out and I’d be happy. Even though I was having success as an artist, it still didn’t make me completely happy. Then it hit me. I realized God gave me the gift to do what I do for a living, and in order to be truly fulfilled, I needed to start using my gift to try and make some sort of positive impact,” Houser shared.

While going through that tumultuous time last year, he teamed up with co-writers Shane Minor and David Lee Murphy to bring those feelings to life lyrically.

“On that particular day Shane and I wrote another song in about two hours. We were just sitting there talking and I said, ‘So I have this idea,’ and I played the first chord and sang, ‘…In God’s Time.’ Then I said, ‘I think I’m supposed to write this song…do ya’ll want to stay?’ We all just looked at each other. David, who had been packing up his guitar to leave, unpacked it and the next thing we knew, the song just wrote itself,” he recalled.

Indifferent to whether or not the song makes its way up to the top of the country music charts, Houser simply hopes the song will inspire those who hear it.

“I hope ‘In God’s Time’ will touch people for different reasons-- whether it’s spiritually or just personally. Nonetheless, I think people will understand what I was going through at the time I wrote it. I think everyone has little ‘miracles’ in their life that happen when they least expect them — and sometimes they’re what need to happen versus what we really want to happen,” he said.

“The song’s about helping myself and others to realize that things happen for a reason.”

Q. It seems fortuitous that you made a record like “They Call Me Cadillac’’ at a time when Nashville seems to be embracing more traditional country singer-songwriters like yourself, Jamey Johnson, and even someone like Miranda Lambert. Does it feel that way to you?

A. I hope so. Miranda’s having phenomenal radio success too. But Jamey and I are still struggling a bit with that. I think the industry as a whole is excited to see people doing what they love, something that’s a little different, that’s not just selling out for the money. Nashville embraces us really well, regardless of whether we’re the top-notch act as far as sales. I think it’s a breath of fresh air for people to hear younger people making music that we grew up with.

Recently honored at the BMI Awards for penning one of country’s “Top 50 Songs of the Year” with “Boots On,” Show Dog-Universal Music recording artist, Randy Houser will reveal his strategies of songwriting on NBC’s Weekend TODAY in an exclusive segment titled “Secrets of Songwriters.” Houser invites co-anchor Amy Robach inside the “Man Cave” at his Nashville home where he often writes to disclose how many of the songs on his current album They Call Me Cadillac came to fruition.

“Sometimes I’ll be sitting on this couch and the words will come from out of nowhere and pop into my head…. I’ll grab a pen and paper and the lyrics will start coming almost faster than I can write,” Randy explains from the den of his Nashville home. “Other times I’ll draw blanks and leave a song incomplete and not pick it up again until I’m inspired by someone’s story I hear out on the road.”

In this behind-the-scenes intimate interview, viewers will discover the motivation and mental element of Houser as a songwriter-- from the moment an idea is born, to the day it is tracked in the studio. He will uncover stories of personal revelation in new single, “A Man Like Me,” and show how others often inspire his writing like in the song “Here With Me,” an emotional ballad completed after an encounter he had with military personnel while performing on a USO Tour in early 2010.

For a portion of the segment, album producer Cliff Audretch III will join Houser to provide insight on how to capture the sound and feel of a song as it is originally envisioned with musical instruments and other special effects.

NBC’s Weekend TODAY will air “Secrets of Songwriters” on Saturday, November 13 in the 8:00 AM ET hour of the broadcast.

I think you can paint more vivid pictures of things as a writer when you’re more honest with yourself and not scared to talk about what you’re going through in your life. Then it becomes a whole lot more vivid on paper, and then in the song, and I think that’s the thing. I decided not to be scared whether people were going to hate it or love it, just put it out and let people decide. That’s what’s most important.

"All those genres you talk about, blues and and soul southern rock, are my categorization. I think they are all country these days. I think it’s all country to me. When you listen to country music now, it is a lot of different things. It is just a good dose of the things we listen to as country people. We grew up in the country, we hear so many things, we hear a lot of blues and we hear a lot of southern rock. We hear a lot of old school country. I guess those are influenced by different things, but they are still country to me."

How has the reception been for They Call Me Cadillac?

The reception to They Call Me Cadillac has been really strong. The record, with all the reviews, it’s all been very, very positive. For the most part, people understand I was making the record I wanted to make as a songwriter. And that is one of the main focuses of this album.

What’s the one song you want people to hear on They Call Me Cadillac the most?

I don’t think I have a particular song that I love the most. I have some I love sonically more than others. There’s a song “Addicted” that I really like. I like the space on the recording. That’s one of the main things I wanted to create when I made this record. Make sure people remember that as a songwriter I can sit, play my guitar, and sing. Sometimes a lot of that gets covered up in production, and my producers, Cliff Audretch III and Mark Wright and I wanted to make the record more organic.a

Randy will hit the road this fall with country star Gary Allan on the highly anticipated second leg of his GET OFF ON THE PAIN TOUR. Randy's close friend Jerrod Niemann will join the tour when it kicks off in Salt Lake City on September 16th and runs through the end of the year.

"We had a blast earlier this year on the road and we are fired up about headlining larger stages," said Allan. Allan has released four #1 hits and more than ten Top 10 hits at country radio. He has released back to back to back platinum records and sold six million albums to date.

Randy's debut ANYTHING GOES, a record that produced two hit singles and catapulted him into the spotlight performing over 200 shows in the last year and earning multiple CMA, ACM, and CMT nominations. This tour will launch just a week before Houser will celebrate the release of his sophomore album, THEY CALL ME CADILLAC, on September 21st.

Turning Tables on Telemarketers

Randy Houser takes no prisoners when it comes to those annoying phone calls from telemarketers. The Mississippi native has his speech down to a science when he gets those dreaded calls. During a recent interview with The Boot (calling from his cell phone), his land-line rang, which he chose to ignore.

"It's probably a telemarketer," laughed Randy. "I have a whole lot of fun with them."

"Do you ever play a trick on the telemarketers?" we asked.

"Oh, hell yeah! That's the most fun," Randy quickly shared. "What's you do is, when they call you, and they start asking you questions, you just turn it right around. They'll ask you something, and you say, 'I'm not interested, but let me ask you a few questions: I've got this new microwave ... how do you set the timer on those things?' And they'll go, 'No sir I don't, but I've got to go.' [Then I say] 'No, no, no, no ... wait a minute now. I need your help.' Just flip it right around on them. They can't stand that sh--. It is a lot of fun to watch them try to get off the phone with you after they've been trying to keep your ass on the phone."

We have a feeling pranksters Brad Paisley and Blake Shelton are taking notes! Randy's sophomore album, 'They Call Me Cadillac,' will be available in stores on September 21.

July 27 Randy Houser enjoyed a trip overseas earlier this year, when he participated in a USO tour with good buddies Jamey Johnson and Kellie Pickler, as they visited the troops in Iraq. But the Mississippi native, who performed an exhausting 30 shows in 11 days while sweltering in the intense heat, says the sacrifices were well worth it.

Randy Houser has wanted to be a singer/songwriter his whole life. His dream began to materialize when he moved to Nashville from Lake, Mississippi in early 2003, bringing an air mattress and a pile of junk in a '92 Cougar. Things picked up for Randy fairly quickly, as he scored a music publishing deal shortly after moving to town and was on the charts by 2005 as a writer, having co-penned Trace Adkins' huge hit, 'Honky-Tonk Badonkadonk.'

Breaking through as a recording artist himself in 2008, Randy first hit the airwaves with the critically-acclaimed hit, 'Anything Goes,' which showcases his soulful, powerful pipes. On the strength of that song and its follow-up hit, 'Boots On,' Randy quickly gained industry recognition and a sea of fans.

As those fans now eagerly await Randy's sophomore album, 'They Call Me Cadillac' (due in September), The Boot caught up with the good-natured star to throw a few unsuspected questions his way. ("Wow! Your questions make me have to think!" he joked with us.)

At a sold-out event at the Wildhorse Saloon, Houser helped Darius & Friends entertain fans and raise money for St. Jude's Children's Hospital. Houser performed the spiritual ballad, 'Back To God', from his debut album Anything Goes, after which Rucker joined him on stage to perform Dobie Gray's hit, 'Drift Away'.

Post: Fans of the world famous Tootsie's Orchid Lounge, celebrating its 50th anniversary this, and fans of Randy Houser have something new to celebrate. Southwest Airlines is now offering non-stop flights between Nashville and Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport, bridging the gap between its Nashville and Panama City Beach locations. To fete the occasion, on Sunday afternoon, Randy Houser joined country music royalty, the legendary Little Jimmy Dickens, and led a Nashville delegation to the new Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport on Southwest Airlines' inaugural flight from Nashville.

Houser and Dickens arrived in style at Tootsie's Pier Park where they exited super-stretch limousines and walked the purple carpet where they were cheered by hundreds of waiting fans. Portraits of Houser and Dickens were then unveiled and hung above the entrance to the packed honky-tonk. After signing numerous autographs and posing for photos, Houser jumped on stage and played a couple of songs including 'Boots On' which Little Jimmy complimented him on after the performance.

Houser commented on Twitter, "Awesome day with Little Jimmy Dickens! What an inspiring teacher he is."

Randy Houser Says Just Call Him 'Cadillac'

"My nickname is Cadillac," Randy tells The Boot with laughter.

Randy Houser's sophomore album, 'They Call Me Cadillac,' has a fitting title for the Mississippi native. "My nickname is Cadillac," Randy tells The Boot with laughter. "Everybody asks me, 'Why do they call you Cadillac?' I always tell them it's because I like everything real smooth. I'm laid back like that. I don't like anybody messing with my good time!"

So, Randy says he avoids "anything scheduled." "I can barely even commit to dinner tonight, because there might be something else that comes up that I want to do worse," he says with a grin. "That stresses me out to think that I have to put something on a schedule that I've got to be at. I can't stand it."

Even though his studio time is indeed scheduled, Randy says that's the place he doesn't get too stressed out ... until he picks up his guitar. "The singing part is the easy part for me," he explains. "That's the time where I might have a little nip on my Jack Daniels and put the lights down and create mood-lighting. I just try to relax. When I'm playing my guitar parts, I'm not real relaxed then because it's work. I'm kind of like the mad scientist a little bit. That's when I've got the bull by the horns and we're wrestling. It's like a cat trying to take down a bear. There are two different times of recording."

'They Call Me Cadillac' hits stores on Sept. 14. The album's current single is 'I'm All About It.'

Randy Houser Hits The Streets

"I'm really excited about this new record," Randy Houser tells GAC's Suzanne Alexander of his forthcoming September 21st album release, THEY CALL ME CADILLAC. The charming, soul-drenched Mississippi country music singer will join Suzanne this Tuesday, May 25, 1 p.m./Eastern on Great American Country's 'On The Streets'.

There's a lot to be excited about these days for Randy Houser. In addition to CADILLAC which features his new single, 'I'm All About It', Randy will contribute vocals to one of his favorite songs, 'I'm A Ramblin' Man', on the upcoming album, THE WAYLON PROJECT, expected to be released later this year.

"They asked me if I would do this song, which is one of my favorites", Randy says. "I had a completely different idea how I wanted this to song to sound, because when you hear that song, 'Im A Ramblin' Man', the way Waylon did it has already been done, I didn't really want to copy that.". Randy explains, "I know that Waylon loved the blues, so I just kinda made it my own thing. It's already a great song, and with great songs you can make it feel however you want to and it's still good."

Suzanne pointed out the enormous buzz around both Waylon's tribute album and Randy's forthcoming record. He jokingly commented, "It's been an incredible thing to be a part of, and buzz around the project should fit really well because we had a slight buzz recording it."

Fans that have attended Randy's shows, know how much influence Waylon had on Randy as a singer and musician. Cameras were there to capture Randy in the studio and he will share some of the footage with Suzanne.
